His new source of trouble sprang from the not anticipated misfortune of Isabella Linton evincing a sudden and irresistible attraction towards the tolerated guest. She was at that time a charming young lady of eighteen; infantile in manners, though possessed of keen wit, keen feelings, and a keen temper, too, if irritated. Her brother, who loved her tenderly, was appalled at this fantastic preference. Leaving aside the degradation of an alliance with a nameless man, and the possible fact that his property, in default of heirs male, might pass into such a one's power, he had sense to comprehend Heathcliff's disposition: to know that, though his exterior was altered, his mind was unchangeable and unchanged. And he dreaded that mind: it revolted him: he shrank forebodingly from the idea of committing Isabella to his keeping. He would have recoiled still more had he been aware that her attachment rose unsolicited, and was bestowed where it awakened no reciprocation of sentiment; for the minute he discovered its existence, he laid the blame on Heathcliff's deliberate designing.

We had all remarked, during some time, that Miss Linton fretted and pined over something. She grew cross and wearisome; snapping at and teasing Catherine continually, at the imminent risk of exhausting her limited patience. We excused her, to a certain extent, on the plea of ill-health: she was dwindling and fading before our eyes. But one day, when she had been peculiarly wayward, rejecting her breakfast, complaining that the servants did not do what she told them; that the mistress would allow her to be nothing in the house, and Edgar neglected her; that she had caught a cold with the doors being left open, and we let the parlour fire go out on purpose to vex her, with a hundred yet more frivolous accusations, Mrs Linton peremptorily insisted that she should get to bed; and, having scolded her heartily, threatened to send for the doctor. Mention of Kenneth caused her to exclaim, instantly, that her health was perfect, and it was only Catherine's harshness which made her unhappy.

leonardo da vinci painting A commonplace, practical reply, out of the train of his own
disturbed ideas, was, I was sure, the best and most reassuring for him
in this frame of mind. I passed my finger over his eyebrows, and
remarked that they were scorched, and that I would apply something
which would make them grow as broad and black as ever.
'Where is the use of doing me good in any way, beneficent spirit,
when, at some fatal moment, you will again desert me- passing like a
shadow, whither and how to me unknown, and for me remaining afterwards
undiscoverable?'

'Have you a pocket-comb about you, sir?'
'What for, Jane?'
'Just to comb out this shaggy black mane. I find you rather
alarming, when I examine you close at hand: you talk of my being a
fairy, but I am sure, you are more like a brownie.'
'Am I hideous, Jane?'
'Very, sir: you always were, you know.'
'Humph! The wickedness has not been taken out of you, wherever
you have sojourned.'

quenchless fire and deathless worm. Gentlemen, my plan is broken
up:- what this lawyer and his client say is true: I have been married,
and the woman to whom I was married lives! You say you never heard
of a Mrs. Rochester at the house up yonder, Wood; but I daresay you
have many a time inclined your ear to gossip about the mysterious
lunatic kept there under watch and ward. Some have whispered to you
that she is my bastard half-sister: some, my cast-off mistress. I
now inform you that she is my wife, whom I married fifteen years ago,-
Bertha Mason by name; sister of this resolute personage, who is now,

heart men may bear. Cheer up, Dick!- never fear me!- I'd almost as
soon strike a woman as you. Bertha Mason is mad; and she came of a mad
family; idiots and maniacs through three generations! Her mother,
the Creole, was both a mad-woman and a drunkard!- as I found out after
I had wed the daughter: for they were silent on family secrets before.
Bertha, like a dutiful child, copied her parent in both points. I
had a charming partner- pure, wise, modest: you can fancy I was a
happy man. I went through rich scenes! Oh! my experience has been
heavenly, if you only knew it! But I owe you no further explanation.
