He turned to the Assistant Commissioner. "I think I've got the psychology of the case fairly clear.Dr Thompsonwill correct me if I'm wrong.I take it that every time A B C brings a crimeoff, his self-confidence increases about a hundred percent.Every time hefeels "I'm clever-they can't catch me!"he becomes so over-weeninglyconfident that he also becomes careless. He exaggerates his own clevernessand everyone else's stupidity.Very soon he'd be hardly bothering to take anyprecautions at all. That's right, isn't it,doctor?" Thompson nodded.

I don't think that Crome liked Thompson's appeal to Poirot. He consideredthat he and he only was the expert on this subject. "It is as Inspector Crome says,"agreed Poirot.

"Dear me!" continued the anxious mother, "what a sad fire we have got, and I dare say you are both starved with cold. Draw your chair nearer, my dear. I cannot think what Rebecca has been about. I am sure I told her to bring some coals half an hour ago. Susan, you should have taken care of the fire." ¡¡¡¡ "I was upstairs, mama, moving my things," said Susan, in a fearless, self-defending tone, which startled Fanny. "You know you had but just settled that my sister Fanny and I should have the other room; and I could not get Rebecca to give me any help." ¡¡¡

¡ Farther discussion was prevented by various bustles: first, the driver came to be paid; then there was a squabble between Sam and Rebecca about the manner of carrying up his sister's trunk, which he would manage all his own way; and lastly, in walked Mr. Price himself, his own loud voice preceding him, as with something of the oath kind he kicked away his son's port-manteau and his daughter's bandbox in the passage, and called out for a candle; no candle was brought, however, and he walked into the room.

She kissed the boy, and said, caressing him, 'It is for thine own dear sake. Thou wilt be faithful, little Charles?' The child answered her bravely, 'Yes!' I kissed her hand, and she took him in her arms, and went away caressing him. I never saw her more. ¡¡¡¡"As she had mentioned her husband's name in the faith that I knew it, I added no mention of it to my letter. I sealed my letter, and, not trusting it out of my own hands, delivered it myself that day. ¡

¡¡¡"That night, the last night of the year, towards nine o'clock, a man in a black dress rang at my gate, demanded to see me, and softly followed my servant, Ernest Defarge, a youth, up-stairs. When my servant came into the room where I sat with my wife- O my wife, beloved of my heart! My fair young English wife!- we saw the man, who was supposed to be at the gate, standing silent behind him.

There is a great crowd coming one day into our lives, if that be so," Sydney Carton struck in, in his moody way. ¡¡¡¡The footsteps were incessant, and the hurry of them became more and more rapid. The corner echoed and re-echoed with the tread of feet; some, as it seemed, under the windows; some, as it seemed, in the room; some coming, some going, some breaking off, some stopping altogether; all in the distant streets, and not one within sight. ¡¡¡¡"Are all these footsteps destined to come to all of us, Miss Manette, or are we to divide them among us?"

¡¡¡¡"I don't know, Mr. Darnay; I told you it was a foolish fancy, but you asked for it. When I have yielded myself to it, I have been alone, and then I have imagined them the footsteps of the people who are to come into my life, and my father's." ¡¡¡¡"I take them into mine!" said Carton. "I ask no questions and make no stipulations. There is a great crowd bearing down upon us, Miss Manette, and I see them-- by the Lightning." He added the last words, after there had been a vivid flash which had shown him lounging in the window.
